What makes a wordmark logo memorable and recognizable?

Recently I’ve been diving deeper into branding because my friend and I are launching a small online project, and the logo question turned out to be harder than we expected. At first we thought about creating some kind of icon, but then we noticed how many well-known brands actually use wordmark logos instead. While looking into the wordmark vs symbol logo debate, I came across an article explaining how a strong typography logo can make a brand more memorable just by using custom lettering and good spacing. That got me thinking about what really makes a wordmark logo recognizable. A few years ago I helped a friend design a logo for his small bakery, and we originally picked a random font online. It looked okay, but honestly it felt kind of generic. Only after we adjusted the letters and made it a bit more unique did it start to feel like a real brand. So I’m curious — in your experience, what actually makes a wordmark logo stand out and stay in people’s memory?
